Hamlet M. Hernandez
Superintendent of Schools

Hamlet became the Superintendent of Branford Public Schools in the summer of 2010.  Prior to arriving in Branford, Hamlet served as an assistant superintendent, principal, elementary, middle school, and bilingual teacher.  Hamlet is a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University and earned a B.S. in political science, an M.A. in reading, and a sixth-year professional certificate in educational leadership.  Hamlet completed his teaching preparation program at National University in San Diego, CA.  He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1982 to 2004, retiring as a Lt.Col.  As a public servant, Hamlet is committed to contributing to his community by working with a diverse group of professionals to educate the next generation.  He enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his wife and two adult children. 

Rachel M. Sexton
Assistant Superintendent of Schools

Rachel joined Branford Public Schools as Assistant Superintendent in the summer of 2018.  Rachel also oversees the East Shore Region Adult & Continuing Education (ERACE) program.  Prior to arriving in Branford, Rachel served as Chief of ACES Institute, Director of Talent Development, and an educational specialist for Area Cooperative Educational Services (ACES.)  Before that, she spent twenty-one years as a public high school English and social studies teacher.  Rachel received her undergraduate degree in History and Education from Dartmouth College, and master’s degrees from Brown University and Wesleyan College.  She pursued studies in educational leadership at Sacred Heart University and Central Connecticut State University.  However, her most formative experiences as an educator have been through her work with Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, MA and the Bard College Institute for Writing & Thinking and the feedback of educational mentors, coaches, colleagues, and students.  She believes that questions are our best teachers and that schools are places of learning for adults and students alike.  An avid traveler, Rachel enjoys cooking, cycling, and spending time with her wife.
