Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we enter the last few months of school, there are some important events for you to know about. Please see below for information about state standardized testing, BPS summer programs, and mental health wellness days.

State Assessments: As required by the state of Connecticut, we will administer the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in ELA and math, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) assessment, and the school-day SAT, which will be online for the first time this year. Please see the testing windows below. More specific information will be shared by your child’s school principal.

  • SAT - Grade 11 - March 23-30
  • NGSS -
    • Grade 11 - May 19 & 20
    • Grade 5 & 8 - May 9-27
  • SBA -
    • Grades 5-8 - May 9-27
    • Grades 3 & 4 - May 16-27

Summer Programs: This summer BPS will offer the programs listed below. All programs will run from July 5 - July 29, 2022. School-Age Child Care (SACC) will be available for before- and after-program care and will provide two weeks of full-day programming in August. More information about program hours and content, meals, and transportation will be shared by your child’s school in the upcoming weeks.

  • BHS Credit Restoration
  • BHS Enrichment (new)
  • WIS Summer Spectacular
  • Elementary Enrichment
  • Extended School Year (eligible special education students)
  • Access Transition Program (eligible special education students)

Mental Health Wellness Days: As a result of new legislation passed during the 2021 Legislative Session (PA 21-46), all BPS students are entitled to two (2) mental health wellness absences a year. When documented following the school’s reporting procedure for student absences, these days will count as excused absences. These days cannot be taken on consecutive school days (e.g., Friday-Monday, Wednesday-Thursday).

As always, thank you for your ongoing partnership with the Branford Public Schools in the education of your child. Please contact your child’s school principal with any questions.

Sincerely,
Rachel M. Sexton
Assistant Superintendent
