Reopening Communication #2

Dear Parents/Guardians:

My communication of July 17, 2020 had important information regarding school reopening.  Since that communication, the District responded and met the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) requirement to populate a template on how the District’s three reopening models meet the requirements set by CSDE. However, it is not the final plan.  While this distinction may be confusing, it is important for you to understand that the fully developed plan remains in progress as we attend to public health data and receive more input from families.  The three models of school for the fall are in-person, hybrid, and remote, as outlined in the recent survey and Reopening Communication #1. In responding to CSDE and our initial design concepts, health and safety for students and staff was the number one priority.  The results of setting this clear priority are potential schedules that are very different from a pre-pandemic schedule.

In the upcoming weeks, you can expect updates from the Governor’s Office and CSDE impacting the district’s fall reopening selection.  Regardless of the model we start with in the fall there remain many tasks which must be done prior to reopening school.  Throughout this fluid and unrelenting process, we are committed to reopening schools safely.  Because the reopening model remains undecided, we must consider new procedures and protocols for arrival/dismissal, restructuring classrooms for social distancing, establishing student cohorts, revising schedules, transportation and school meals. We must reopen schools safely and this requires planning, coordination, communication and a mind-set that “change” is a constant for everyone during a pandemic. I understand the uncertainty of the reopening model can create frustration.

In the upcoming weeks, you will receive additional information about the reopening, with the most critical information being how school will start in the fall.  Based on results from the surveys, input from the public health department, the Ad Hoc Committee and the expertise of our transportation and food service providers, the District is advocating to open in either the hybrid or remote model.

In closing, it is our intention to create a frequently asked question (FAQ) document for your reference.  The email reopening@branfordschools.org should be used to submit questions related to the reopening. This tool closes on the August 10, 2020.  Once closed, the District will create and post a FAQ on the District website.  I wish to thank you for your input, communication, and partnership during the pandemic.  Together, Branford will reopen school in the fall safely.

 Warm regards,

 Hamlet M. Hernandez
